Designing a banking bill pay service as easy as the best P2P payment platforms

The Brief

Billgo offers a platform for banks to provide customers with seamless, real-time bill paying, straight from their own banking app. Our challenge was to transform a collection of developer-designed widgets into a payment experience that felt as easy as the P2P payment services customers have become so accustom to.

A cohesive, easy to configure design system

The Billgo product sits inside banking apps. Financial institutions needed to be able to ‘plug’ the technology in and have it feel trustworthy for their customers. We created a design language that could easily exist together with a banks’ branding, with minimal customization required to make it feel like it belonged. The system was composed of components that could be adapted to suit the unique architecture of a banks’ logged in experience.

 
 
 

From a collection of widgets to intuitive user flows that put customers in control

We started with a library of bare bones widgets that could perform specific functions. We gave shape to each feature, designed how customers should navigate through the experience — from onboarding and adding their payees, to making payments and tracking billing history — and added a layer of visual cues and communications that would help customers pay their bills on time. With clear due dates, auto-pay a toggle away and one simple view into all their bills, customers have a little less to worry about.

 
 
 

Creating clarity in the details

With over a 100K billers on the Billgo platform, unsurprisingly there is quite a bit of variation in the type of bills that can be paid. From a family run cleaning company to Netflix, varying amounts of available billing information and payment options had to be made clear and intuitive for customers to interact with, so they could manage and pay all their bills with ease.

 
 

Building value for Billgo, banks and customers alike

From enabling smaller institutions to provide their customers a best-in-class bill pay experience, to uncumbering the bigger banks from costly, legacy systems that can’t keep up with customer expectations — the new Billgo platform has been well received by banks and fintechs. And for customers, there’s no downside, just simple, secure bill paying right in the banking app they already use for managing their money.
