The Background
Siblings is a sustainable home essentials brand making clean candles in a plant-based, 100% compostable bag. I started Siblings together with my brother in 2019 as a creative passion project, a way to contribute to a more sustainable future in some small way. In our first few years of business we’ve found thousands of loyal customers, and saved as many vessels from landfill.

We found a better way of doing candles.
While the humble candle might not strike you as being a particularly wasteful product, the reality is that the industry creates millions of vessels every year that often don’t get reused or properly recycled — ending up in landfill. Not to mention the unnecessary extra carbon emissions shipping around heavy glass containers, and the dirty business of petroleum-based paraffin wax and cheap fragrance oils. We set out to make a product that would be clean on multiple fronts, from the packaging to the quality and production method of the wax and scents.
A radically different DIY candle
We wanted to change candle consumption behavior from single-use, to a circular system of reusing and refilling. We started by spending time testing form factors and packaging materials, and figuring out how a candle refill should work. We knew it had to be “as easy as making a cup of coffee” for people to adopt this new product. And while we would sell a “Forever Vessel” as we call them, it was important to us that people were able to refill vessels they already had as well.
Packaging and process aside, our goal was to create a candle that would compete nose to nose with the big luxury brands. We partnered with one of the world’s top fragrances houses to create our scents, and chose a filler out of Los Angeles, California making a sustainable coconut blend wax.
Reuse, refill, relax.
Our solution — make yourself a premium candle in a couple of minutes. Simply microwave the bag of wax for 2 minutes, center the included wick in your favorite vessel, and then pour in the liquid wax. The candle is made of majority coconut wax — a slow-burning blend that’s more eco-friendly than pure soy, and much healthier than paraffin — infused with non-toxic, ethically made fragrance oils traceable from seed to scent. The empty bag can be disposed of in home or industrial compost, and your vessel can be refilled again and again.

What began as a passion project (and still is) has evolved into a business that brings people joy and has helped a few folks take a small step towards living more sustainably. The greatest reward for me (aside from endless free candles, haha) is to hear from happy customers how much they love our product — that they had fun ‘making’ their candle, and it makes their day a little brighter.
A work in progress
The world of D2C is fast-paced and always changing. With a new cool brand on the block every other week, we try to keep up by continuously iterating. Iterating on our product, our sales strategies and how we communicate on our site and social channels. We keep close to customers through surveys, email questionaires and reviews. Most of all we offer a best in class product, we don’t cut corners or make compromises. We focus on providing exceptional value to build long-term brand fans over time.
